Biography

My career unfolded in four distinct phases:

CAF

Served as a CELE officer with postings in Goose Bay, North Bay, and Cape Perry, before completing my four years of required service in Ottawa.

Nortel

Worked across the globe with assignments in Ottawa, Baghdad, Beirut, Jakarta, Singapore, Montreal, Hong Kong, and Beijing.

Startups

Joined two NASDAQ IPO ventures and two unsuccessful startups in Florida and California. Later returned to Canada to support a UBC spinoff in Vancouver, which was eventually acquired by Dolby Laboratories.

Consulting

Spent the final stretch of my professional life in M&A, primarily in the United States (Silicon Valley) with some engagements in Asia, until the COVID-19 pandemic effectively closed that chapter.

Along the way, I completed a work-break MBA at IMD in Switzerland, shortly after beginning my career at Nortel.

In 1989, I married Lai Pheng Lam (Singaporean Chinese) in Montréal. Our daughter, Lianne, was born in Florida in 1999 and graduated from McGill with an MEng in 2022. I separated and retired in 2020.

Retirement

I am now in the early stages of retirement, designing and building a home on my 10-acre experimental farm in North Kelowna (McKinley Landing on Okanagan Lake), where I participate in a truffle cultivation cooperative with UBC.

I continue to run—although struggling to keep my 10k under 50 minutes—ski (a bit slower than my 100+ kph peak from a few years back), and bike (now with an e-bike, courtesy of Okanagan hills and summer heat).

As balance to the physical pursuits, I enjoy indulgent cooking (and eating), good wine (a clear benefit of Okanagan living), meaningful travel (through BC and abroad), and the company of great friends.
